SOMEPLACE BETTER
-when two worlds collide and there’s no where else
to go-
A vivid portrayal of the strains of our Indian people living in both contemporary
and traditional worlds, mixed with the influence of Drugs and Alcohol. Explicit
life-like and heart wrenching scenes are conveyed most realistically by native
actors, both youth and elders. An archival scene similar to early residential
school abuse opens the film in a dream sequence, interweaving the history
of yesterday to today.
Selected for showing at the Sundance Film Festival, due to its excellence,
the description was as follows: “Someplace Better is a shoot-out between ancient
custom and federal law. Holding both guns is a native police officer who
is forced to take sides when an old widower kills his grandson in self defense.
The stakes rise when the old man wants to travel to the other side of life
where his wife and eternity wait. But a red-neck corporal has other plans.
The three men stand-off at a cultural crossroads: one man laying down the
law…one man challenging it….and one man torn between two worlds.
